The mandibular lever.

چکیده
D ental articulation is the relationship of adjacent and opposing teeth during function, and its study demands a thorough knowledge of the roles of the various parts of the chewing apparatus and their integration into the chewing act. In order to understand how teeth articulate, it is important to know the mechanics of jaw movement in function. This articlc will discuss the mandible as a lever and apply lever principles to the normal and abnormal physiology of the dental apparatus.

A new technique for mandibular osteotomy
Sagittal split osteotomy (SSO) is a surgical technique largely employed for mandibular mobilizations in orthognatic procedures. However, the traditional design of buccal osteotomy, located at the junction of mandibular ramus and body, may prevent more extensive sliding between the bone segments, particularly on the advance, laterality and verticality of the mandibular body. The author proposes ...

Integration and evolution of the cichlid mandible: the molecular basis of alternate feeding strategies.
African cichlid fishes have repeatedly evolved highly specialized modes of feeding through adaptations of their oral jaws. Here, we explore the molecular genetic basis of the opening and closing lever mechanisms of the cichlid lower jaw, which have traditionally been used to describe the mechanics of feeding behavior in bony fishes. Quantitative genetic analyses demonstrate that the opening and...

متن کاملCondylar Masseter Translation and the Function of the Superficial Muscle in the Rhesus Monkey
The relationship between translation of the mandibular condyle during symmetrical mandibular rotation, i.e., symmetrical jaw depression and elevation, and the function of the superficial masseter muscle was examined in light of relative torque and the length-tension relationship for muscle. Lateral cephalograms of live adult rhesus monkeys ~Macaca mulattu) were analyzed using two models: (1) Mo...
